The ad:uPA virus from Yecuris is a recombinant adenovirus expressing the Urokinase-like plasminogen activator protein (uPA) to induce acute liver damage in the FRG®KO mice prior to FAH+/+ hepatocyte transplantation. The ad:uPA Liver Transplant Enhancer provides an effective means of improving hepatocyte xenografts by inducing liver damage/repair mechanisms thru the transduction of hepatocytes by a E1 deleted form of Adenovirus type 5 carrying the urokinase type plasminogen activator gene. uPA, a serine protease, cleaves the pro-enzyme plasminogen into the active serine protease Plasmin. Through proteolysis of the extracellular matrix (ECM), Plasmin plays an integral role in liver repair and restructuring following acute liver damage.
